SENIOR
ADULT PROGRAMS

The JCC’s program for men and women 60 years of age
and over features a variety of social, recreational, cultural,
educational, creative and physical activities. The focus is
on continuing growth and enrichment for its members.
Senior Outreach Programs
The Suffolk Y JCC/Birchwood/Nesconset Nursing Home
Outreach Program
- For isolated Jewish elderly adults residing at these skilled
nursing homes.
- Staff social workers and social work graduate interns
coordinate programs for Jewish holidays and special cultural
events.
- Staff social workers and social work graduate interns
provide the elderly residents with an opportunity to connect
with their Jewish heritage and traditions.
Senior Outreach Services (S.O.S.) for Homebound and
Semi-Homebound Senior Adults, 60+
- Short-term counseling services for individuals and families
by staff social worker and social work graduate interns.
- Home and nursing home visits by staff social workers
and volunteers.
- Information and referral services to assist senior adults
and their families in obtaining needed community services.
- Telephone companionship.
- Minibus transportation for mobile homebound senior adults
to special JCC social, recreational and cultural events
and activities.

HIICAP - The New York State Health Insurance Information,
Counseling and Assistance Program
Provides free health insurance information, education and
assistance to Medicare beneficiaries, their families and persons
soon to be eligible for Medicare. HIICAP counselor Sonny Sarfaty
will be available to answer questions on Medicare, Medigap
Insurance, Medicare HMOs and long term insurance. Please call

Body, Mind & Spirit Center - A New Approach
to Social Day Care
The Body, Mind & Spirit Center is a special place that
will enhance the life of senior adults and help them achieve
greater independence. Senior members are encouraged to explore
new interests and to cultivate new talents in a warm, friendly
environment. A wide variety of activities are offered each
week: Wholistic Approach to Health, Wellness, Tai Chi, Yoga,
Aroma Therapy, Massage Therapy, Poetry, Art Therapy, Music,
Gardening, Feng Shui, Computers, Health and Safety, Humor,
Games, Cooking, Social Interactions, Sing-a-Longs, Meditation,
“Simply-Stronger” Excercises, Lectures, Parties,
Intergenerational Activities and Kosher dairy lunches. Short-term
counseling and supportive services are available.
The Body, Mind & Spirit Center being offered by the Suffolk
Y-JCC and JASA, is funded by a Long Island-NY UJA Federation
grant for the frail elderly. Pre-evaluation is required for
acceptance. Center activities take place Monday through Friday,
10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Special activities on Tuesdays. Offered
to the community at no fee. September '05 - June '06.
