“Unity in the Community” is a day of community
service for teen’s grades 8 through 12. Unity is a program
of the Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center in cooperation with
the Islamic Center of Long Island and the YMCA's of the Great
South Bay and Huntington.
Our goal is to engage teens of diverse ethnic backgrounds
in a worthwhile intergroup experience. For one full day, the
teens work together to beautify their community in the spirit
of good will. The program provides teens with the opportunity
to meet one another, and work together at various social service
organizations with the common goal of making a difference
in the community.
Last year, 400 teens from over 25 organizations came together
to volunteer at sixteen sites. Services varied at each site
depending on the need. Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon
Center had its bird sanctuary cleaned, lunch was served to
the homeless at Temple Beth El, a patient garden was planted
at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital etc. The teens walk away
with new friends and a sense of pride in their Long Island
community.
